Tea, Earl Grey, hot… Make it so number one…

It used to be the realm of science fiction (heh, get it?). A man walks to his computer, inputs what he wants and walks to a slot in the wall and watches as the whatsit spits out of the slot. Well it’s not quite that simple just yet, but we’re getting closer. Known as 3D printers or “fabbers” everything from small parts to — no kidding — airplane wings are being printed. The printers work by laying down materials, building up layer after layer until you have an object. Now many of these machines cost $23,000 or more. But the Fab@Home project is a little different you can Google Fab@Home and get the plans to build one of your own. It’s part of a project by Cornell University’s Computational Synthesis Lab. The end of an era: Steve Jobs leaves Apple

The news earlier this week was sad and shocking — Steve Jobs, a throwback to the corporate titans of an earlier era, has retired as Apple CEO. It’s a sad day in many ways as with Jobs’ ongoing health problems it’s pretty clear a funeral is probably not far off. Sad for me because, as I write this on my Windows laptop, I remain an unabashed Apple fanboy. I use a PC at home because it’s what I can afford, but I still drool over the sleek new products coming out of Cupertino. I use a top of the line iMac at my day job and absolutely love it.
